General Information:
Webster House is an emergency overnight shelter for residents of Dutchess County, open every night of the year. Dutchess County adults (age 18+) seeking shelter must come to the screening site at 29 North Hamilton Street in the City of Poughkeepsie by 7:00 PM. After a brief screening, those accepted are transported to Webster House. All guests are expected to abide by a general set of rules of good behavior. Individuals that threaten the safety of others (such as those exhibiting violent behavior or under the influence of alcohol/drugs that seriously impair their normal abilities, etc.) are not accepted at the shelter. Shelter guests returning on a regular basis are required to participate with Hudson River Housing case managers in a personalized program focused on independent living and permanent housing. Webster House can accommodate up to sixty individuals. Hillcrest House Transitional Housing Hillcrest House offers a supportive environment with 60 units of housing for adults transitioning out of homelessness. Residents may stay at Hillcrest House for up to two years, and during their stay they must pay monthly rent (based on their income) and participate in Hillcrest House’s on-site meal plan. Each resident is assigned a Case Manager to assist them in obtaining community services/resources and in pursuing their goals of achieving greater self-sufficiency as they move toward more permanent housing. Interested applicants must complete an application and participate in a screening process and an interview in order to be accepted at Hillcrest House.

Transitional housing is affordable supportive housing designed to provide housing and appropriate support services to persons who are homeless or who are close to homelessness. The transition is to help them be more self sufficient to move towards independent living on their own. Transitional housing locations are oftentimes called Halfway Houses. The naming of the two (Halfway House OR Transitional House) is oftentimes interchangeable.

Many Transitional Housing programs are subsidized and are income based. Income based transitional housing generally charges 30% of your income for rent when you do have income. Contact the transitional housing facility to see if this applies.

Services provided at transitional housing facilities varies from substance abuse treatment, to psychological assistance, job training, domestic violence assistance, etc. The assistance provided varies, but it is generally affordable and low cost housing. Transitional housing facilities also may or may not assist with alcohol and/or drug substance abuse treatment.
