General Information:
Sojourner Truth House (STH) is a 501(c) 3 not for profit organization located in Gary, Indiana and is sponsored by the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ. STH serves homeless and at-risk women and their children and underserved members of the community through three streams of service. 1. Clients staying in local shelters come to the day center for help obtaining benefits, referrals to community support agencies, basic skills and employment training, healthcare screenings and referrals, counseling and assistance with finding housing. 2. Once they have satisfactorily completed STH class programs and obtained housing, clients can maintain support through therapeutic programs and ongoing case management as members of the Transitional Outreach Program Participant (TOPPs) program. 3. Community clients come to the food pantry for help meeting intermittent basic household needs. STH addresses the needs of its clients with a holistic service delivery model that strengthens the mind, body and spirit of the clients we serve. Sojourner Truth House is a ministry of hope and help for homeless and at-risk women and their children sponsored by the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ. Through hospitality, advocacy, integrative services and collaboration, participants improve their quality of life and that of the community in a safe, trusting environment. When homeless women and their children come to Sojourner Truth House, many are ashamed of their circumstances. Our staff greets them with a welcoming smile and a promise to always respect and honor their dignity. At Sojourner Truth House, we understand that these women have real barriers that must be faced head-on. With personalized case management and individualized goal setting, we are able to determine the needs of participants and provide them with the means to overcome homelessness. Outreach: The Outreach Program has been designed to address the spiritual, mental, social, financial and personal concerns of women who were homeless but have transitioned into their own homes. Many of these women have endured generational poverty, mental illness, substance abuse, domestic violence and/or personal tragedies. It is the goal of the Outreach Program to assist these women by equipping them with the skills and resources needed to become self-sufficient and to become a positive contributing member of the community. STH participants attend daily therapeutic and life skills groups to obtain the tools they need to move towards a life of stability.
