Offers 18 month free transitional living program for pregnant or parenting families 18 - 21 ages facing homelessness. Waking the Village operates Tubman House, an 18 month transitional living program serving Sacramento’s homeless, parenting youth and their children. At Tubman House, youth experience college support, intensive mentoring, and healthy living so that they leave prepared to be leaders in their own lives and leaders in the lives of their children and communities. At Tubman House, youth experience college support, intensive mentoring, and healthy living so that they leave prepared to be leaders in their own lives and leaders in the lives of their children and communities. Tubman House provides a holistic approach to addressing the needs of homeless parents and their children. Tubman House is actually two houses, each offering a home and support to four families. Residents receive free housing, groceries and essentials. In exchange, each resident lives simply and commits 3 hours a week to Youth Corps, spearheading community improvement projects to build up their neighborhoods, schools, and natural spaces. Each resident also commits 8 hours daily to college, schooling, or employment. Children always come first, and parents commit to daily quality time walking to parks, reading, and playing with their children. The most important work our residents do is attaching strongly to their children and defining daily rhythms that promote development and stability. Tubman House also runs an on-site Child Development program.
