A small group of women who shared the belief that housing is a human right and that all people should have a safe, clean place to sleep at night and a safe place to spend their days founded Deborah?s Place.The agency quickly grew to address the broader needs of the population it served, adding daytime support, transitional housing, and case management, health, therapeutic, education and employment services. In 1995, Deborah?s Place completed a groundbreaking project, co-locating shelter, interim housing and permanent supportive housing in one facility. In 1998, Deborah?s Place created a paper and jewelry making social enterprise, WomanCraft Today, as Chicago?s, largest provider of supportive housing for women, Deborah?s Place offers a continuum of interim and permanent housing options, all linked to vital supportive services at four locations throughout the city. Transitional housing is affordable supportive housing designed to provide housing and appropriate support services to persons who are homeless
or who are close to homelessness. The transition is to help them be more self sufficient to move towards independent living on their own. Transitional housing locations are oftentimes called Halfway Houses. The naming of the two (Halfway House OR Transitional House) is oftentimes interchangeable.
